Where do you report something that is unconstitutional? Would you like to do the honors?
Santa Fe, Texas has already been to the Supreme Court before for forcing religion onto students, and it lost, creating the "Moment of silence" across all of Texas. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Fe_Independent_School_Dist._v._Doe Currently I am a Junior in Santa Fe High School and on the required reading list for this year is 4 chapters of the Bible, this is obviously unconstitutional as initiating prayer at football games was ruled unconstitutional. I am an Agnostic if you must know and will object to reading the Bible, saying it violates the first amendment of the US Constitution. Is there anything I can do to make Santa Fe lose it's forced religion on students?

- Why would it bother you to broaden your mind? Do you think a old old book is going to hurt you? How will it hurt you? Some of it is boring most of it is not. Just a lot of old history with a Christian slant. Tell me how will it hurt you? I have read some of the bible and have never felt any ill effects from it. Why don't you just refuse to read it and tell them you are afraid of increasing your mind and not worried about your grade. That is the truth of it.
- Actually the first amendment says that Congress (not the school district) shall make no law "respecting an establishment of religion". The bible as required reading is not a violation of your first amendment rights. And the court determining that prayer before a football game somehow violates the first amendment is judicial activism at it's worst.
- That depends on the context. If you're taking a comparative religions class and you are assigned to read the New Testament, Old Testament and Koran....well, good luck and enjoy your F.
- . As 'mattle' said, if it's a Comparative Religion course, tough luck. Perhaps reading it and other holy books will reinforce your agnosticism, maybe it will change your mind... who knows? It makes for some interesting reading, though, no matter your faith. Lots of old-fashioned language and phrasings, weird allusion to sin and the devil and sex and battles, etc. HOWEVER: I suspect that the Christian Bible is the ONLY holy book you'll be reading. Folks in Texas love their Bible. I say: "So F^$*(^ing what?" Sounds like they are trying to cram the Good Book down your throat. Can you find out if indeed it will be Comparative Religions, or will it be a Bible-only situation. And if the teacher is stupid enough to start teaching you about religion, that is going too far for a public school: it is illegal. Stand on your principles: if it's Bible-only, refuse the class, Then start contacting local, state and national news shows, like Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann on MSNBC or Thom Hartmann on PBS/NPR. Find out who your Congressperson is (FORGET your 2 Senators, they are USELESS)l there are several very sharp Democratic representatives in Texas (LLoyd Doggett anong others) but Congressmen can ONLY deal with THEIR OWN constituents, not a different Congressperson's constituent. And FORGET dealing with Gov. Perry or the Dept. of Education of Texas. You could also write a letter to Arnie Duncan, the Secretary of Education for the Feds. .
