how come when I delete someone they dont get deleted?

I have about 4 people in my buddy list I want to remove and I can't figure out how to do that

1. If you decided you don't want someone on your Messenger List anymore, it's a simple process to remove them. How to delete someone from your Messenger List: Click the contact's name while pressing the Control key to highlight the contact. (You can also right-click on the contact's name.) Select Delete. Click the Delete confirmation. To delete someone by using the Contacts menu: Click the contact's name in your Messenger List. Click the Contacts menu and select Delete. Click the Delete confirmation.
