- 1) Allegro Non Troppo--a parody of Fantasia and a satire of Western civilization, all rolled into one. This one's on my top five faves of all time. 2) Happy Birthday, Wanda June--based on the play by Kurt Vonneugut. And speaking of Vonnegut... 3) Slaughterhouse Five--based on Vonnegut's masterpiece, directed by George Roy Hill, who is just a wee bit more famous for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Sting. 4) Breaker Morant--1980 Aussie film, based on a true story from the Boer War. 5) King of Hearts--The lunatics are literally running the asylum, with the late great Alan Bates as a WWI soldier. 6) Montenegro--bored, horny housewife goes crazy, but there's no Yahoo Answers in 1981; tragedy ensues, but it doesn't feel tragedic until the movie is over. 7) Murder, My Sweet--based on Raymond Chandler's Farewell, My Lovely; Dick Powell plays Philip Marlowe, Chandler says Powell got it right (meaning, Powell's was better than Bogard's Marlowe!!). 8) O, Lucky Man--Malcolm McDowell and Ralph Richardson in a stream-of-consciousness nose-thumbing at unbridled capitalism. Catchy theme song. 9) The Last of Sheila--quirky whodunit, quirky (but good!) cast; Deadwood fans, look for a young Ian McShane. 10) Inserts--Richard Dreyfuss, washed up silent movie director, turns to silent porn. Veronica Cartwright nearly steals the show. How's that?
