if so then how many books does one have to sell, also, is there such a list in the uk?

- It is very hard, also I really don't know how many books have to be sold, and I'm going to give you a sucky example, but sadly, Twilight. It had sold at least maybe...a million copies, to get on that list,...but I'm just saying. -shrugs-
- First of all, just writing a book and finishing it is more than the vast majority of would-be novelists ever manage. Second, of those books that ever get finished, only 1 in 1000 ever get published. The proportion of those books that sell enough copies to make the New York Times is *tiny*. So, yeah, very hard. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. And yes, there are similar lists in the UK. Every broadsheet newspaper has one.
