is the section 8 waiting list different depending on the state?

For example is it shorter or longer in NH than it is in MA? I'm a single mom and dont know how section 8 waiting list works but think it would be good for me and my son to get on it for a few years at least. Its hard making all the money I need especially with rent being so high everywhere! Thinking about moving to NH from MA because things are cheaper in NH.

Public Comments

  1. It varies on state & population.
  2. The waiting period for welfare assistance varies by State and the availability of funding.
  3. Each county within a state has its own waiting list, there are no state wide ones. You can apply in 2 counties, the one you work in and the one you live in.
  4. I am in New England and I can tell you that for both NH and MA, you are looking at at least two or three years, maybe longer. Get on that waiting list as fast as you can, and report anything such as disabilities that may get you some special consideration (maybe getting on faster). NH has astronomical rent, but it's cheaper buying things in stores.
