- bond energy is the energy required to break the bond(s) between 2 atoms bond length is the distance between the nuclei of adjacent and bound atoms. bond length plays a key role in bond energy. the closer the 2 atoms are, the more energy is required to break these bonds. multiple bonds between 2 atoms decreases the bond length covalent bonds have relatively weak bonds, in comparison to ionic compounds, and will therefore have lower bond energies. in all bonds, the difference bewteen the atoms' electronegativities also plays a role in the strength of the bond. the bigger the difference in electronegativity, the stronger the bond between 2 atoms in covalent compounds, the difference in electronegativities between 2 non-metallic atoms is anywhere from 0 to 1.7, unlike ionic bonds where the difference is greater than 1.7. therefore, bond strength will be lower in covalent bonds.
