how do i add a contact to my online list?

when I receive a message from a contact it will not allow me to reply, it asks me to add the contact to my online list, how do i do this.

1. on the messenger menu bar, click on "Contact > Add a Contact" : type the contact's account. your request will be sent pending for approval.
