- Everyone applying for Section 8 has very low income. That's kind of the idea. Wait lists are currently very long, many over 5 years.
- Hey you are lucky someone posted recently they are 8 YEARS into a waiting list. You are getting SSI isn't that enough govt' ENTITLEMENT for you to make it. You are using the computer quite effectively meaning you could work on one at a JOB!
- As long as you are not homeless, you will stay on the wait lists until they get to your name. Nothing happens right away with housing. 17yrs ago my family was homeless for over 9 months, my husband, myself & our 3 children in one hotel room. The house we had been renting the well pump for the water went ( No Running Water) & the landlady said it was our problem not hers. My husband had gotten laid off & then ended up medically & mentally disabled. Unfortunately even being disabled doesn't move you up the list, only waiting does, or people ahead of you who are homeless or were in domestic violence situations. Overcrowding, overpriced, doesn't matter. All you can do is put yourself on other open waiting lists in your area & expand the area you apply to. Contact other housing authorities & other new apartment complexes being built to see if you can apply for any other subsidised housing. Also have you given them your updated information if you just recently got SSI, give them the letter saying you're disabled.
- Sorry, but there is no such thing as a front of the line pass with section 8. The waiting list can be years and many areas are not even taking applications anymore. Even best case, it takes a few months to just process the application and locate a place to live.
- Most of the people waiting for a voucher are disabled or low income or have children or are seniors. You dont get ahead of everyone else because you are a single mother. You have to wait your turn. If it has been 4 years you should be getting up there on the list. Call the Sec 8 hotline and find out where you are on the list or ask your case worker. What do you expect us to do? Thousands of people cant even get an application to go on the waitlist. As COUNTRYLADY said, look at other types of subsidized apartments beside Section 8. You have to do a little legwork and find the info.
- No, no one gets it right away, all go on the waiting list. Some of the lists in that area have a 9 year wait. You can call your case worker every 6 months or so for an update. You have a specific number in line, they will tell you what it is.
